Summer Fake Tans - Tried and Tested

Looking for a Quick Pick Me Up?

If you feel a bit pale this time of year and you are longing for summer to arrive, get some fake tan action going to give you a lift to make you feel like you have had a holiday!

I am somewhat of a fake tan connoisseur because I don't tan much, but also I would much prefer to have good skin when I am older so I never go out in the sun without high protection sunblock. As a result I have tried and tested most of the fake tan products out there and here are my absolute favourites. I can guarantee none of these products have any orange glow!

Spray Tans

If you want to get a full all over tan just before you go on holiday (so you don't look too white lying by the pool),  or if you have special occasion coming up or you just don't have the time with a busy schedule to apply tan with the care it requires to get it perfect.

I recommend a spray tan called "Naked Tan" from Australia. It is the favourite of the celebs and fashion followers it has been featured in OK magazine and Cosmo as a fab product.

This spray tan is different than the other spray tans on the market. With this tan you can shower 2-4 hours later - so no more of that sticky feeling all day :-) and the colour is great very natural not orangey at all. It smells fab (think vanilla and coconut) and it is made from a organic DHA from Keto-sugars.

The best thing for me is I used to spend ages scrubbing off the tan when it started to flake a few days later - but this doesn't happen with Naked Tan because it fades very naturally - so no harsh scrubbing or embarrassing tiger lines 5 days later!

My tips are:
Make sure you exfoliate the night before, wear no body lotions or deodorant the day of your spray application and ensure you wear loose fitting black clothing (I always wear a loose black maxi dress and sandals (you don't want any white clothes going to get a spray tan ;-)). Naked Tan dries very quickly which is a bonus.

The days following your tan application moisturise every day (I recommend a moisturiser for dry skin (as it is extra rich), don't use harsh shower gels or soap. I really like the Naked Tan goddess glaze (tan enhancer and glow) especially for my legs and your tan will look great for at least a week if not more.

Also remember this has no sun protection in it so keep applying sunblock when you are in the sun.

Naked Tan available at Bare Waxing Glenn Innes, Grey Lynn or Albany
Full Body Spray: $55, $45 if you rebook within two weeks.

If spray tanning is not the thing for you........

At Home Tanning

Don't forget your good exfoliating sponge/gloves for pre-exfoliation and latex gloves for application to save you hands getting brown :-) I also use a large cotton pad to apply tan to the backs and sides of my hands and tops of my feet so that it is done perfectly. If you are tanning at home apply a water based moisturiser (not oil based) to your knees hands and ankles/feet (or anywhere that's really dry) as it will stop it becoming darker there or streaking.

Tanning Lotions: the pro's for lotions is that they lasts really well as moisturises skin when applied but they can take a while to dry and sometimes be streaky is not applied with care.

Every Day Face (Fair to Medium)

I am a great advocate of St Tropez bronzing lotion as its smells lovely, lasts well and fades nicely (no horrible fade patches on elbows and ankles). It is sometimes hard to get here so I get my local unichem chemist to order it in - it only takes a few days. A large bottle of this would last me up to 6 months as you only have to apply twice a week and a small amount is all you need $36

Instant Lotion Bronze & Deep BronzeLe Tan instant Bronzing Lotion is another great alternative at a great price available from your local supermarket. This applies really well and keeps you skin moisturised, it also has a slight colour like San Tropaz so you can see if there is any streaking :-) Lasts well and sweet coconut smell. $18.99 Countdown.

Mousse

Very quick and easy...

Foaming Mousse Bronze & Deep BronzeA great option for busy mums I used this a lot as it dried really quickly and gives a great colour but they don't generally last as long as a tanning lotion. This ones smell is nice and doesn't have a really sticky feeling when applied. $18.99 Countdown

Natio Mousse

Natio Self Tanning Mousse - Create a natural looking tan
A friend recommended this tanning Mousse with pure plant extracts to me and I tried it I do agree it dries really well, has a streak free result and have a lovely smell. Natio Self Tan Mousse $18.99 Farmers

Tanning Sprays

I don't tend to use tan sprays at home too often (due to the cleaning up factor, I usually use them in the shower cubicle that way can rinse down any residue when I am finished). I mostly use them on my legs only I find Sally Hanson airbrush legs is great for this.

It is actually makeup for your legs and once dry won't rub off on your clothes. I like it because it covered any unsightly veins or freckles quickly and easily for perfect summer legs - Unichem $24.99

Airbrush Legs

Let me know if there is a tanning favourite you have :-)
